In my opinion, holograms could be a common means of communication in the future. Today many examples attest to the veracity of my words, such as speech by Prince Charles in Abu Dhabi :

a. Airport case

Currently trials have already taken place in the field of airport services, such as Manchester or Luton’s thanks to four holograms (Graham, Holly, John, Julie) were put on probation to accommodate passengers in areas security control. Their goal is to inform travelers about travel procedures (preparation of boarding, instruction in terms of safety …) giving them the information they need. The hologram is barely more expensive than a conventional display, and works 24/24, thus the airport has decided to diversify the technology on other devices.

Thanks to researchers at the University of Arizona, it is now possible to combine the 3D image moving through holography. The holographic system could send and receive data almost instantaneously with a 360 º.

We then imagine the impact of such technology on the market. The repercussions would then take several markets (entertainment, media, coaching at home, conference, engineering …).

This photography is from Musion. Musion is a Canadian company that develops holographic solutions. This show was a presentation of a communication between a hologram and a real person at the same time.

Operation of holographic presence:

Step 1 : The person is photographed by camera at 360 °.
Step 2 : The information is then sent over an Ethernet cable
Step 3 : The picture is inscribed on a slab of plastic, designed in 3D, it is refreshed every second.

And future challenges for researchers will be to evaluate the energy consumption of the appliance and ensure image quality. According to the Scientifics, they agree on the fact that such technology of communication will be part of our environment in the 10 years.

c. Innovation II :

One of the greatest innovations in the world of holograms is that now we can interact with holograms. In fact, researchers from the University of Tokyo have developed a completely innovative technology that now push the boundaries of fiction so close to us. They create the touchable hologram that interacts with us.

To achieve such a result, researchers have relied on software projects about ultrasound waves. And to calculate the exact position of the hand relative to the hologram, the scientists used two controllers of the Nintendo Wii Wiimote. This project is the example of a transfer of technology between two companies.

One can imagine that such advanced technology could have commercial benefits and practices quite interesting, especially in the media or sports, for example. Providing consistency holograms, it may be possible one day to spend some external devices such as the mouse or the keyboard to directly manipulate a projected screen as a hologram.
